Hope that this is not stating the obvious, but what has helped me to avoid this situation after having done a similar thing as a newbie is to remember that if I pull the shifter to the neutral position between 1st and 2nd or 5th and 6th, and release my lateral pressure, the shifter will center between 3rd and 4th. This should help one avoid the 6th to 2nd problem. You also have to stay relaxed and not tense up when you get in these situations. You also can practice such manuevers on an open road when there is no one in front of you just to get used to launching the car by dropping down a gear or two. I don't mean to insult anyone's intelligence. Just submit this for those whom it may help.

That's another good point. The centering springs are there for exactly that reason.

Does anyone know what are the maximum mph per gear for the 2002 S2000 (slightly different gearing for the 2002 year I believe)? I can't figure it out. First of all, things happen VERY quick in happy, happy VTEC land. Secondly when I am looking at the speedo it seems to be misleading. I redline second and shift to 3rd at about 60, then I back off, however the speedo is still going up. I would hate to redline and hold it until the speedo evens out.

The gearing isn't different. The speeds are posted on the board's FAQs.

When the red light blinks, you're at redline. When the limiter cuts you off, you're just over redline. Shift when the light blinks.

To do any major damage you'd probably have to be going well over 68 mph. Redline in 2nd is what...62. Yeah it's way into the red zone, but if the check engine light's not blinking, then you should be okay. Don't make a habbit of it though.

For me, I'd say 55 is iffy as to which gear. You've got a little bit of second gear left, but not much. If it's a really important downshift, it matters a lot and you'd want to go to the low gear. Any speed over that and it's above second.

Next time you'll be more aware of what's going on.

Why don't you run it to redline and just put the clutch in, let off the gas and let it coast. You shouldn't slow down too much before the speedometer catches up.

I downshifted from 3rd to 2nd while at high RMP's. I was well above 9000 RPM as it made a horrible noise. The next stop light I was at, my S2K started to idle extremely rough and the check engine light went on. And just as everyone describes I had bent 2 valves. Ouch, right? not exactly...my Honda dealership covered the entire thing under warranty and had it back to me the next day. The beauty of being in good graces with your dealership.

The next day, my car was at the dealership for wver a month for the same thing.
First S2000 teardown for the mechanic. That's a huge difference though.
