Technically, isn't there already something foreign in the fuel tank?

At least you didn't drop a sugar cube into your gas tank (well who would other than prank) cuz it can kill the whole engine.
I heard that this myth was proven wrong.

The surface area of the fuel pump inlet screen is way too big for a nut to block. You will have no problems with it. I would leave it there if it was in my tank.

you should fish it out. before it gets sucked so hard that it rips through the sock filter. then squeezes its way through your fuel line. then through the fuel rail and bust through a valve and get stuck in your combustion chamber. then you'll really hear a rattle.

to me this is like that one thread with the dude that dropped a plastic cap in his tranny. If it was me, my car, I would take the time to take it out. But then again its entirely up to you.

Wait, you were changing the coilovers and you removed the metal cover on the fuel tank, and removed the fuel pump, and dropped a nut into the tank? That hole is 6" atleast higher than the nut locations for the coilovers and a PIA to reach. How did you do it?

well if i dropped a cap in my tranny then i would most defintely get that out. thats alot different than a bolt or nut in a gas tank. that would suck if the cap got caught inbetween a gear. but theres no moving parts in the gas tank. i guess if your that meticulous about your car then i dont see why not tanke the time to fish it out. but if you arent then screw it.
