Default Drove my first s2000- noticed a couple things

I'm considering purchasing an s2k, probably an AP2, for track and weekend warrior duty. I introduced myself here

I test drove my very first s2k yesterday- a 96- and noticed some cowl shake which I expected for a vert. It wasn't as bad as it could be, which is a testament to the construction of the car and is pretty impressive given when the original chassis was penned and how light the car is. I would like to stiffen it up though if I get one. I'm sure there are underbody braces and cages galore that can help with that.

The second thing I noticed was more of an issue and I'm hoping someone can enlighten me on it- the steering felt slightly vague, if not sloppy. Small off-center corrections felt a bit like the car was wandering, very similar to how it feels when steering rack bushings are going off. Are there known degradation issues with bushings on this car? is this specifically a known problem that can be easily remedied or is it suggestive of a more costly issue?

Thanks all
-Ash

A 96? Care to elaborate? And if steering feels the way you describe then its a first on me, I've never heard an s2000 described that way.

it because the 96's had some steering issues that were not addressed until 4 years later ! Gees.

I think he may have meant an 06, the 9 is next to the 0. If not then how did you.get your hands on the prototype?

06's have a softer suspension than other years...maybe that's what you were feeling. I'd like to know the mileage before adding further opinions though.

Good old '96. Quite a year. Reminds me of the Monty Python bit with the waiter who multiplies everything by ten.

By coincidence i drove my first s2000 yesterday as well - a 2006 - and if the ap2 revs like that, i can't imagine what an ap1 drives like.

Just curious: if you guys drove a 2006 with 77k on the clock, would you be suspicious about the fact that the car -- which is otherwise in impeccable shape -- is already on its second clutch? It bothers me.

2nd clutch at 70k is totally fine.. not uncommon for any "sports" car. and a side not, ap1 all the way my MY00 rides like a go cart, cant wait for my fortune auto coilovers to make it worse!

I wouldn't think anything of it. Some people were never meant to drive stick. They like to drag the clutch out which will cause it to go quicker. The 06 also has a cdv which is often interpreted as a slipping clutch, so the previous owner may have wanted the clutch replaced (even though the clutch was fine)
