Default Dyno Numbers

Tonight I ran a dyno on my stock 04 AP2 w/ 11,9xx miles. The car was run on a DynoJet 248C in-ground dyno with ambient at 76-77*f and humidity at ~20%.

I got an SAE corrected 197.73 whp. See the graph below...

My questions are:

1. People seem to dyno alot higher than me with a stock AP2. What dynos are you using? Has anyone dyno'd on the same dyno as me and gotten different numbers?

2. My car seems to make a huge jump at VTEC. It jumps some 30+whp and over 15 ft/lbs of torque. That doesn't seem like an optimal VTEC engagement point...I would think the graph should be smoother as it switches into VTEC and goes to redline. Anyone else notice anything similar?

Thanks!

A "lot" higher than you? Hmm...from what I've seen I've seen #'s from hihg 190's to low 200's for an AP2.

What #'s were you seeing? Although your car isn't at the high end of the spectrum it seems sort of normal from what I've seen.

People were getting 220-240whp stock AP2 (so goes the rumors). Those were probably dynos that give abnormally high numbers. But still...197.73 kind of sucks.

This is a super long thread but the #'s thrown aabout in that thread are nowhere near that.

Mebe those freakishly high numbers were on a dynapack? That's a long read but very worthwhile. It's helped me decide on the direction for my car.

Can you summarize that thread? I started reading to like page 7, then clicked the "last" button and realized that thread is 90 pages long.

My head nearly exploded.

I did read enough to realize that most of the people on this board have no idea what they're talking about and no idea what actually makes power. Ofcourse, I've already assumed as much.

Generally, when I post, I look for the 1 or 2 guys who know what they're talking about and ignore the other 10+ guys who are going off of hearsay and guesses...

I can believe 197.73 SAE corrected is about right for a stock S2000. Still, I haven't seen anyone else's dyno with the huge VTEC jump like mine. Makes me think that my car can be much faster by tuning the VTEC better.

197 is average with anything over 200+ being above average, you are fine.

I would expect the curve to "jump" at VTEC because its essentially an instantaneous hp increase. The curve is plotting hp as a function of engine speed so it makes sense to me that there should be a jump when VTEC is engaged. A car without VTEC would have a smoother curve to redline. If the plot didnt increase then you should be worried but the #'s look good to me.

That is the standard vtec engagement from what I've seen. The engagement is actually set a little later than optimal just for that reason, so you feel vtec engage. Get a vafcII, or if you budget allows an aem ems and some tuning time and move your vtec engagement down some (most seem to suggest between 300 and 500 rpm sooner) and you'll get a much smoother more linear engagement. You'll also net another 10 or so hp and tq, although you'll have to reset your ecu around once a week with the vafc.

You shouldn't worry as is though, as previously mentioned, you're right in the norm.

dont worry you've got a perfectly heathly ap2/ dynojets read a hair lower than dynapacks and some other dynos. your power curve looks normal to. it just needs some exhaust and good tuning now!
