I was driving on an open stretch of freeway the other day going about 70mph when I past this BMW coming onto the freeway off the ramp. Well, I think he noticed me as from about 100yds behind me, he began accelerating hard into the lane next to me and gunned it when he passed me. Well, me being the S2k driving, maniac, lunatic as some of the other boardmembers have referred me as (Punked boxster thread) I dropped down to third and floored it after the Bmw. I caught up to him and at this time I was going about 100-110 and noticed that it was supposedly an M3, it looked like an M3, with M3 wheels and body styling, and the M3 badge but after I hit 110, I started to pass him pretty quickly and left him behind. He saw that he couldn't keep up and from way behind I could see him getting off the freeway.

I was wondering if this could've been a real E36 M3 (I think thats the engine, the generation M3 before they redid it for 2001) because it was clear that he couldn't keep up and I caught up to him pretty quickly even I came from behind and he had a head start in accelerating?

For all those "keep it safe and off the road people" it was late at night and the freeway was empty ok? I didn't kill anyone.

Maybe 110mph on a public road was all he felt comfortable running and he just backed out of it!

No M3 who pursues a car is going to quit at 110mph cuz he's scared. But I also doubt that this M3 was planning on racing you all the way to however high you were willing to take it since you are a lunatic, crazy ass 20 something year old kid according to some members of this board.

An E36 M3 will keep up. I remember some M3 owners here who told me that the S2000 and E36 M3 are very similar at speed. Whether it was a real M3 or a fake M3... we'll never know will we?

Damn, I was hoping this one would've been a really competitive race. Good post, man!

I raced an M3 a few weeks ago.
From about 50mph all the way up to 1** (it was way up there). I jumped about a half car length, but that was it.
From then on, it was side by side. I couldn't budge on him, and he couldn't gain on me.
I never took my foot off the floor, except to shift.
The road was clear, middle of the night.

Just wanted to see for myself, since both seem so similar on paper. And I can attest to the fact that both are very closely matched. I know for a fact that if either one of us had a head start, and really stayed on it, then there is no way that the other would be able to catch up.

If you drive REALLY fast, you'll leave him behind - the E36 M3's top speed is governed at around 140 MPH.

Palmateer - I came upon traffic right around that speed.
But I guess you're right. He is governed past that.

The truth is, both cars are very evenly matched for about 95% of the run.

Just what are M3 wheels, and what do they look like at 110mph? How many spokes do they have? Do you really get a rise out of making this stuff up?
