I've used them for long highway trips with the top down, yes.

By the way, there's an interesting thread around here somewhere in which someone did measurements at speed (both with the top up and top down) and posted the resulting dB's. I believe there was also a link to the OSHA standards for hearing protection/noise pollution exposure. The conclusion was that if you're going to be driving very long with the top down, you should have hearing protection in or risk hearing loss.

I always use them on trips longer than 30 minutes.

I'm using Etymotic Research earplug speakers with my iPod. I can drive with the top down and hear the music on my iPod without jacking up the volume even at 80 mph. If I'm going to attack some tight twisties I take them out. I can't hear the engine with the earplugs in.

there are also custom fitted ear plugs... the SoCal Miata club used to get group buys on these. $50? fitted to your canal. a LOT cheaper than etymotic earphones

i will be wearing ear plugs this summer once the top comes down. the full exhaust is just really too loud at 80mph+

I have raced several different types of cars and karts , i always wear plugs so i can concentrate on what the car is doing and not what the engine is doing. With out plugs you automatically focus in on the engine noise.

Earplugs are great to snuff out the wife every time I hit VTEC. Seriously, I usually use earplugs on the longer, highway speed trips or in heavy traffic. It is much more pleasant and you can turn up the radio just a little bit and hear it fine.
