I know this is an unpopular position, but I've always thought that the dash controls are against the overall aesthetic of this car, and very awkwardly implemented.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, they could have fit every function and more onto one button/knob. Plus, they're superfluous and contrary to the otherwise stark interior.

I just thought I'd let everyone know that I'm exploring means to eliminate them from my dash, while still keeping the start button. I'll probably take the opportunity to illuminate the ring around the start button, too.

I'll keep you posted.

If you're talking about the audio controls, I agree. I use the volume toggle quite a bit (wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there), but I've never touched the other buttons while driving. I like the ventilation/fan controls.

Totally agree, useless POS. Cruise control come second. Anyway, been playing around with idea myself and I been looking for gauges that'll aesthetically match the rest of the dashboard and placed them right in that spot. Probable digital gauges that'll read water temp., oil pressure etc. 2.25 inch analog gauges wouldn't look right. Any ideas, anybody? New project for the enterprising folks?

I use the volume, mute, and CD track/radio change controls quite a bit. Have never used the MODE control though. I love them right where they are

While I may be in the minority, I like the controls. I find that the volume is at the right distance for my fingers to adjust them while on the steering wheel. I also have used the mute and channel. The Mode is ok but a bit large given it's function.

I actually use the controls so often that I don't know the radio controls too well. Especially when trying to skip cd tracks. To me the Scan and Skip buttons aren't set right. I would like them to be next to each other for the same function instead of on top of each other. Minor irritant.

I think they are great, only lacking a rocker on channel to go up and down. I think any permanent change is reducing the value (and usability) or your car.

I use those buttons all the time.
I even try and use them in the wifes car and
she doesn't have them.

I agree with cdelena. I find the volume and mute controls very useable, the channel button would be better if it toggled up and down. As far as the mode button, well, that's the weak link as it could have been so much more useful.

As far as aesthetics, I believe that they were styled this way to be a mirror image of the HVAC controls on the right.

But if you insist, see this link to the ZigZagAsia.com project car site: http://www.zigzagasia.com/cars/s2000/009/project.html .

Excerpt: "Stereo controls are taken away, instead a digital voltmeter is placed".

It would be cool of the audio control button could also rotate as a volume knob, and the rocker could act as a channel up/down or track up/down, and then leave the mute button...
