Engine Burn-in
Question:
I'm up to 1,500 miles on my '02. When does the nasty engine burn-in smell stop?
Anything over 7500 RPM for an extended period of time produces an oil burn smell that is obviously not cool, especially with the top down. Yes, oil and other fluids are topped off. Should I just keep pushing it? It does seem to get a little better each time after a hard run.
I apologize if this has been asked before. I went 8 pages deep in a "burn-in" search with no luck.
Thanks,
Brian

Engine burn-in smell? I never smelt anything unusual in my car for the first 30k miles, let alone the first 1500 miles. Unless you are doing something odd (like dropping the clutch improperly on a launch, which *will* stink pretty bad), there shouldn't be any oil burn smell. Besides, the clutch drop smell is an ozone-type smell, not a oil burn smell.
You might want to take it in to get it checked out.

I never smell oil burning either....you may consider to take your car to check by the dealer...
if you mean the new engine eats engine oil habit, it probably need to get to around 7000 miles to stop this habit...I think...but not too sure.

Thanks for the quick response guys.
I'll have to get it checked out.
Yes, the clutch could be the problem (not really a "burning oil" smell, smells like burnt rubber to me)....but is dropping it around 3 or 4k at launch unusual? Do you smell anything doing this? I haven't even turned the tires from a stand still yet. It's more of problem after high revs as far as 6th then stopping normally. Well in advance of a hard brake.
Thanks again,
Brian

Every new car I've had, including the S2000, has produced some burnt smells as the hi-temp paint in the exhaust system cures. But this has always disappeared by the end of the first 1000 miles. It's exactly the same smell you get when you fire up a wood stove after painting it (provided you used wood stove paint, that is).
Beyond the first 1000, I'd say the smell you describe is abnormal. As for the clutch, I engage it at around 2K rpm in normal starts. I avoid 6K drops altogether and use 3-4K sparingly. The S2000 clutch is not a strong point.

I have an 02' S and at 1,100 miles...there's still a bit of residual "break-in smell". I know exactly what you're referring to. However, after 500 miles or so, the smell is considerably less noticeable. I usually don
