Engine Cover Paint Cracking/Flaking/Peeling
Quite the contrary, it's extremely pertinent to the conversation here. It's "pointless" because your answer is no, you wouldn't wonder about what's wrong with a fender or side mirror, how many times somebody has disassembled it, how many times it's been on and off the car. It's paint failure, pure and simple, especially on models that are now 20 years old. Yet, the same paint failure is present on a part in much harsher conditions with the heat that it endures and the thought is....OMG, is this engine going to explode, what's been done to it?!?!
Hilarious comment!! Man, I was laughing too.
Actually it's not, nor were the previous 2 S's that I owned, but I don't care if they were or if mine was now. Clearly there was an issue with Honda's paint process for that particular part as it's known to do this. I guess I'm just overall perplexed at the stupidity of some of the comments on here when it relates to failing paint on a piece of metal directly on top of a hot engine as if the car should now have a branded title. I couldn't care less if there was a single fleck of paint on my valve cover and the rest fell off, it is in no way indicative of a car or engine with problems...IT'S PAINT FAILURE! I had my side mirrors painted this spring because the 20 year old clear coat was completely gone, guess what, and this is totally going to blow your mind...the mirrors were still in operating condition!! I'm not kidding, I could sit in the car and my window control switch was still functioning, the mirror moved all around, the motor inside hadn't dissolved or anything!
But hey...your cars valve cover has all of it's paint, weird flex, but to each his own.

After year upon year of building, owning and driving Hondas,I have learned lack of care is not the main source of flaking, blistering paint on the head covers. It also is not because of grime or Honda's coating method or quality. The number one reason for this is...heat.Do a little study on where the first flaking begins.I have seen 30 or more D17 engines. The flaked ones were all starting at the same areas. All had been over heated at some time. There is a pattern not a coincidence.Upon buying any car, blistered engine coatings should be a warning to look the car over very carefully.
