Default Engine Life Expectancy?

Right now I'm looking at picking up and s2000 to toy around with and I'm currently looking at one that has 140,000 and I'm wondering if I should steer clear or not. Obviously thats high mileage and the engine would be replaced with a JDM motor eventually but I would need the car to last about 40,000 miles as is and I'm wondering if thats close to possible?
And the car hasn't been run hard, the lady that owns it babys the hell out of it.

I have seen a few here with 200k. You may be able to find the thread in a search.

There are quite a bit here with over 100k. Its really hard to say though...how well the motor was maintaned, how hard it was driven, etc.

This question is impossible to answer. IMHO, a gentle owner with maintenance records will always carry more weight than an unknown maintenance history with lower miles. In any case, 140k is a LOT of mileage.

It's very possible. But I wouldn't guarantee it. So I wouldn't do it unless you have $8k lying around in case of the engine blowing.

CKit is absolutely right. Don't buy an S2000 with 140,000 miles on it unless you can afford to replace or rebuild the engine. You may or may not have to mess with the engine, but you don't want to get stuck with problems you can't afford to fix.

Wouldn't it be smarter to simply have the retainers inspected before buying the car?
Retainer inspection should be standard practice with any AP1 that might have been over reved by any of the previous owners.
