Default Engine Misfire

For a long time now I've been getting an intermittent S2K engine misfire. After cruising at low RPM in higyway traffic, the engine would seem to load up and just crap out -- bad miss. Then I would take it on a surface street and wind it up to redline in first and second gear a couple of times and the problem would go away. Lately its gotten more frequent and this week it happens every time I drive. As of yesterday, it won't go away at all.

I talked to my mechanic at Pasadena Honda yesterday -- Marty, he's really smart. He asked me what kind of gas I burn -- Shell premium. He asked me how often I took it above 8,000 RPM -- most every day. He checked the oil, said it was a quart low, and added a quart. He said VTECs need oil and that might correct the problem -- it didn't.
He drove it and said the misfire seemed to hit when the VTEC came on and maybe the VTEC wasn't working on all cylinders. (I don't know what that means.) He said it was weird because the computer was supposed to make a dash light come on with misfire and it didn't.

Because of scheduling conflicts we both have, he won't be able to get to it until next week. Anybody out there had this problem or have any ideas. It's driving me nuts.

I've been through some engine misfiring myself. Does your CHECK ENGINE light come/stay on after one of these occurrences?

You might also want to do a search on "check AND engine", "map AND sensor", or "fuel AND injector" for some other threads in the UNDER THE HOOD section.

I had missfire only once, just after starting.then it stalled and took 4 tries to get it started. that was with less than 2000 miles on it. No check engine light and she ran fine after that. 4600 miles since I got it 8/1.GOD I LOVE THIS CAR!!!!!!!!

Hey Raptor,

I used Shell once, and I had misfires like crazy on an older car of mine. Ever since that day, I've never used Shell again. Not sure if it's the gas you're using, but it could be.
