Default Engine replaced @ 14K miles...

Local dealer has a one owner MY01 with just over 60K miles. The CARFAX shows extensive maintenance records, including an engine replacement @ roughly 14K miles in late 2002. I havent seen the car in person yet. Sale price is high $12s.

Thoughts?

According to the CARFAX, it seems that all work was done at Scott Honda in West Chester. Although some of the entries just say "service facility".

I'll try to get in touch with the owner and find out what the deal was.

Chances are it went through something like this:

Try to get the contact info for the previous owner and ask them about it.

Don't know, but if it were up to me, I'd stay away from a car with a replacement engine. Chances are there could be more issues aside the engine.

The engine was replaced 8 years and 46K miles ago.
I think any issues with the replacement would have surfaced by now.

may have been as innocent as a mis-shift, happened to lots of people early on who weren't used to the gearbox. Bad number 4 cylinder issue was quite prevalent as well in earlier years. New engine might be running perfectly fine, it wouldn't bother me much if it all checks out.

I'd stay away from that car... There so many for sale in mint condition and decent miles that you shouldn't even bother with one with a story.

You can pick up a MY03 GPW for ~$12-13k w/ 40k miles, mint condition one owner.
I've witnessed that deal myself.

Shop around and be patient...

If it was done a 14k then chances are it was warranty work. With warranty work honda only pays a certain amount of hours so if the tech doesnt finish in time then they dont get paid for the hours over. My buddy had an acura with a bad tranny, after it went out 50k later, during inspection of putting a new tranny in, the mechanics found shortcuts were taken. Techs hate warranty work since not a lot of money come in from there and the company always try to cut the hours down so they are being rushed.
