Default Engine "thud" when starting..

Just picked up a used 05 S2000, with 5900 miles. Traded in my 01 C5.. this is a great car.. love it. Everything seems to be mechanically fine with the car & I have had a mechanic take a look at the issue I seem to be having.. but I thought I'd post it up on here. Just about everytime I go to start the car.. I turn the key, wait a second or two.. press/hold the start button.. the engine fires up fine.. but right when it catches to life.. I hear a fairly loud "thud." Almost as if a tranny or engine mount was loose. Does it everytime. I don't know if this is just normal driveline lash from the car & that my ears are just overly sensitive.. dunno. Doesn't matter what gear I'm in when I start the car.. I hit the start button, it cranks, and when it fires/catches.. it makes a thud. Sounds silly.. but who knows. Opinions? Comments? Thanks in advance.

I just leased a new '05 and the same thing happens to my car on start up. It almost sounds like it's going to start knocking, but then settles down right away. You really shouldn't have anything to worry about, as long as the engines sounds fine when driving and when revving it hard.

Good Luck with your new toy

It sounds like the starter may be getting caught on the flywheel????. I would take it in and have Honda fix under warranty.

"I just hired a doctor/attorney/CPA/financial planner/architect/contractor/physical trainer/pilot instructor/coach/whatever and he is going to give me some advice, but I thought I'd try to get some ammo from the internet to contradict him with...what do you guys think?"

Just listed to the guy who has his reputation on the line and is paid to work for you.

Oh ok.

Anyway.. to everyonelse, I stopped by another local Honda dealership, started one of their new 05's.. sounds more or less the same as mine. Mine sounds a bit pronounced, but I think that's only due to having more miles on the OD now. To be safe, I'm gonna take it to a dealership my buddy recommends for service.

Guys all s2000s have the startup thud. it is normal and not an issue.

Nothing is broken, nothing to fix.

Go start any s2000 on the dealers lot and they will do the same thing.

My 01 did my 05 does, so do all the NY METRO crews s2000.

Feel better now

it's just the visceral sound that Honda built into the "experience"

When you start the engine, a large hammer swings down and wakes up the hamsters. This is the cause of the "thud".
