I have avaliable a stock cat back exhaust and wanted to experiment alittle. Do you think it would be possible to cut the Y from the stock exhaust from one side and just make it a single. Then I would also replace the muffler with a performance muffler for less weight and mabey some minor HP gains. What weight would i be able to save with doing this. Is it worth it. Thanks.

 

I started a custom exhaust project a few weeks ago.

It is going slow because I'm teching myself to weld also.

By going to a single, you are going to save weight, those stock mufflers are made with three ply steel. Very heavy.



I'm going to keep the center resonator and helmholtz and just go dual straight back with no mufflers....for FUN!

 

I totally agree with you about the stock mufflers. And in the end, its a 4cyl. I think it shouldnt have dual exhaust. Too much weight. My idea was to keep one side of the y exhauxt and when you remove it, since there would be a hole, to patch it. So you would have a single pipe like it is now going back but just going to the right side. I would then replace the mufflers since there are soo damm heavy with some aftermarket ones.. Is this possible. I think it would be pretty easy to do. I have a friend who owns a body shop. I would think it would take 1hr to complete. Whats your take on it. Thanks

 

One more thing, I already took out my resonator when i purchased the car. Im hoping with taking one side off and replacing the muffler and resonator, i should go from 51 to mid 20's in weight. Are both mufflers what make up most of the weight or the piping.
