I tried searching for a fuel bladder system and got nothing.
I know you already went with the NATO cans but here's another option just in case you change your mind or want to pursue your initial inclinations. Kramerica Industries has been researching bladder system concept. I have, in fact, seen the work and it appears to be quite promising. There's an intern from NYU who is currently there and is completely enamored with the promise of the concept.

Although the bladders were initially designed for oil spill prevention, it is likely that they can apply the concept to fuel. I would advise contacting them. Good luck.

on long trips across parts of the country that I don't know, I always throw a couple 5 gallon cans of fuel into the car, just in case..

last time that I had to use them, I ran out of gas about 3 miles from the closest gas station.. sure glad that I had them since it was chilly (sub zero weather) and I wasn't looking forward to walking..

One more option.. Get a Chase hitch on the car, buy like a small tire carrier/platform that attaches to the hitch, and then you can load it up with as many gas cans as you can fit on there.

75mph cruise. A/C when needed. Windows/top down as I see fit.

On a 300 mile return trip. I drove with a friend with the top down at 75mph with the A/C on (our feet were hot) and I got 28mpg. I figured top up would have improved things.

One thing I am is very consistent.
Um, yeah. Thats what I said I get. 28 is not 31.

Never said 31 with top down. But easy does it. I get 30-31mpg frequently on longer drives. I am at sea level which might make a difference.

Not that I know anything about smuggling and boats, but get a small bladder tank and install it in your trunk. They're portable and you can add 40 gallons easily.

That's how they get range at sea.

Shouldn't be a problem as long as 300 of those miles are with a 45 degree steady decline. That way once you run out of gas you can coast in nuetral without running out of steam
