Default extended warranty

I was advised by dealer service dept to get extended warranty. This apparently is part of 'Honda Care' and not a third party deal. I am of the opinion that extended warranty in general is not exactly the same as the factory warranty. My dealer says that I can trust this to be just as good as the factory warranty.

Any comments or experiences?

what year model?
the experience so far has been pretty good, judging from this board- in terms of need for any warranty.
i bought an extended warranty since i bought the first model year, but if i was going to buy a more recent model, would not waste the money.
its a honda, and nothing serious seems to be wrong after the factory warranty!

My extended warranty cost me 500 bucks.. so far, in about 7 months out of regular warranty I've racked up 900 bucks in warranty work...

I'm well ahead

from what I've seen, for the most part, unless you get a lemon, an extended warranty is "snake oil".. I've bought 4 brand new and 1 almost brand new(6000 miles) cars and have only had a few problems with 1 of them (the 6000 mile car, rotors kept warping about every 5K miles) the other cars have been very reliable (3 Fords and 1 Honda) and never needed any servicing that a warranty would require...

of course I've only had 1 of them ( my 01 Explorer) long enough to get out of the factory warranty(54K miles on it now) and the S2000 is rapidly approaching the end of it's factory warranty with 33K miles....

I would never buy a car I thought needed one - if these things were not huge money makers for dealers, why would they sell them? The markup is huge. I've owned 30 new cars in my life: figure the cost per warranty and factor in the amount I have re-invested, and it comes out to many times what I have ever paid in out of pocket non-warranty expense.

Generally, I have several cars, one a beater or a truck (or both), and several hot cars, which get babied. Maybe I would feel differently if I drove them more, but my experience has been that most parts that make it past 3 years or 36k are good for 100k. So do the actuaries and underwriters, apparently. I know there will be anecdotal contracdictions, but I play thye percentages, and they favor "The House". Same as Vegas.

Plus, many parts are now coevered way past the normal warranty, as part of the emissions warranty.

They are for suckers, in my opinion (suckers, please do not take it personally).

I got the 7year/100k warrantee on my 2000 only becasue as a "first time car buyer" it helped me get financing through honda and that saved me more than if I had to finance some where else. The idea is that if the car breaks instead of not paying the note and fixing the car, I wouldn't have to pay to fix the car and Honda gets their money.

I guess it's kind of a nice peace of mind thing too. The cool thing is that I can get all the typical TSB things fixed freeeeee.

I would be very reluctant to own a car out of warranty these days.

My prior experiences, having VWs for most of the past 7 years (with one lemon forced back on them), has influenced my view.

But if normal wear parts break it can be exceedingly expensive. What is the price of a fuel pump job? What is the price of an alternator job? Because dealerships are charging unreasonably high prices along with high part prices, a warranty can pay for itself easilly.
