OK, well I don't know how to do the math exactly.. but it must have been somewhere around there..

I was playing on an abandoned road.. I was up to about 85 and I was shifting to 4th, and I accidentally pulled towards me in to second.. I pulled the clutch out partially and the engine started screaming, I immediatly pushed the clutch back in and slowed down. The engine appeared fine and there were no wierd noises or smells.

There was a jogger near by that looked at me funny.

I probably just shaved a couple months off of the life of my engine!!

I would say you dodged a big bullit! Good job putting the clutch back in.

Is this an advantage of right hand drive? I've missed a couple of shifts but it's always been in the upward direction, ie 5th instead of 3rd.

I don't really see how right or left hand drive would make a difference...

cjb80 said he accidentally pulled towards him. I just wondered if that's a more common mistake (more natural action) than pushing away. It seemed to make sense because my own mis-shifts have been towards me also. I wonder what other peoples' experience has been? I've certainly never shifted into too low a gear in any RHD car I've ever driven in over 12 years.

I did this two times when racing in the old days. Nowadays can't be done with the sequential gearboxes. Anyways, you either shaved years off your engine or you did not hurt it at all. You will know within a few days. Good luck!

Indeed, its nice to know the engine didn't frag. I suspect that the stock bottom end would sustain 10,000 rpm easily (ITR will take 9,000 rpm and it has a 4% longer stroke and an inferior rod ratio). I'm just not so sure about the valvesprings.

On the tranny, the S2K unit has a very distinct W pattern. For a LHD driver car, this means that you should always be applying pressure away from you on upshifts, particularly into 3rd and 5th (and 6th for me since this is my first 6 speed).

Hmm, I thought what this post was about ... Actually a proper Spoon conversion can actually reach such RPMs.

i have cold sweat nighmares about doing this very thing. All the non-S2K owners I talk to when I race say "hey, did you hear about so-and-so's S2K? He shifted down instead of up. Pop went the engine."

I imagine the Spoon work includes even beefier valve springs? It doesn't take a whole lotta interference to frag the valves.
