F20C Engine Study

I'll take this one since it gives me a chance to talk yet again about my Galant VR4.
There are a lot of flavors of this awd turbo in Japan, including some with a "cyclone" intake, a perfect example of variable intake volume. A lot of JDM 4G63T engines come into the US with these intakes. Some Galant VR4 owners install them as an upgrade.
The Goal:
Long intake runners provide better low end torque by producing higher flow velocity at low RPMs. Short runners provide more high end power because they allow better less restrictive breathing at high rpm where flow volume is more of an issue than flow velocity. (Any wonder the S2000 uses low volume short direct runners?)
How they work:
On a variable volume intake there are two sets of runners built into the intake, one longer and one shorter. Air is directed through one or the other set by valves that transfer the intake flow from the longer runners to the shorter ones as RPMs rise. The idea is to give you the best of both worlds, kind of like if you took mild cams for lower rpm grunt and combined them with more radical cams for better....oh, yeah, we have that already.

I suspect no one found the F22C a worthy subject for publication of such a white paper.
