for those of you who are young and on the fast track to "be someone" at a firm, hospital, corporate whatever, assuming you didn't "upgrade," would you be embarrassed to be still driving the S at that point in the future? your peers will probably have the newest merc, bmw, porsche etc.
No. I'd just buy a second car, like a 545 or an STS, (maybe a SRT8 300C) if I needed to present that image. A lot of my higher ups drive Olds-mobiles and Buicks or 330s or so, so being able to say I drive a Honda has its merits.

There's nothing wrong with the S, to people that actually know about cars it's on par with the Boxster, SLK, Z4 etc. Besides who the hell cares what they think if you do good work and aren't an ass. And also the people that are making good money would probably be smart enough to drive a reasonably priced car and put money into a home/business/other investments.
i'd get a much more high line car assuming I need an expensive car as "representation" for my business. but i won't really mind still driving around in an S if i could already afford a BMW M for example.

I make a very good living and went through the "new BMW every three years" phase in the 90's. My current daily driver is a 2005 Volvo S60R which runs circles around the 5 series and I drive my S on weekends.

I disagree: I do feel that it matters how people perceive you in the professional world. However ...
I personally feel that the car's make, model and age have little significance in other people's perceptions. It's more about how one drives it and what he/she does with the car.
To keep things "professional", I would imagine that it's more "appropriate" or "classy" to drive a bone stock S2000 than to drive a 540i with a 300lb body kit, GT wing, 30 stickers on the door, and a 95db exhaust. Also, it's also a better idea to keep the car relatively clean (i.e. no junk in the cabin and no thick layer of dust/road tar on the paint job) and to drive the car "normally" (i.e. no VTECing inside a parking lot ...).
