ntphan is right that the federally mandated 55mph speed limit was set to optimize gas mileage, but that was back in the 70's. Not to say that it will get you the best mileage in your S.

Well, looks like I'm going to be crusin' at 65mph on the freeway for quite some time. If any southern cali people see a slow black s2k on the freeway, it could be me

The key is to keep the engine RPM below 4000 in any gear and not punch it. Just squeeze the gas lightly untill the car get's up to crusing speed. On the fwy...top up and windows up helps a lot. 6th gear is a very big plus also but it's in how much you use the brakes and throttle. Use common sense...the faster you accelerate the less MPG you get. If you are going down hill you can go faster in 6th. If you are going up hill depending on speed you may get better MPG in a lower gear.

Keep in mind that the 55mph limit was for all cars, and was set in 1973 or 1974. Most cars then were family sedans or station wagons with auto trannys and lots of wind resistance. (I was driving a '72 Buick Wagon with a 455 cubic inch engine -- got about 10 mpg on a good day.)
They were in pretty much the same gear from about 35mph on up. Most didn't have automatic overdrive like today's auto trannys have -- and they certainly didn't have six gears.
Since the engine in my S2K seems most relaxed at about 3500 - 400RPM, I would think a steady pace at that speed in 6th would be pretty close.
Not a lot of fun though.
