Faux Performance Mods

You know;
Big rear wings that actually slow the car down.
Stickers
Stick-On Carbon fiber bits.
"Aero-Kits"
Cold Air Induction kits that suck in hot air.
Wheel and tire sets that decrease the rear wheel HP.
Brake calipers that actually stop worse than stock
Exhausts that weigh and perform about the same as stock but SOUND faster.
Suspension mods way too low and stiff to handle real roads.
Anyone else have some favorites?
What ever happened to "sleepers" Cars that were real fast but didn't advertise it?
Seems we are in the age of Profilers, people that want to "look fast". In the old drag racing days it was called "all show and no go". The cars that looked the fastest NEVER were.
Bottom line is that there are a couple of people who actually have spent a lot of money and much dyno time to gain 20 HP or less. They put a lot of hard effort and time into the car for not an awful lot of return. This is their hobby and they enjoy it so good for them. BUT no matter how hopped up you think you are making your S2000 it is going to be within 20 HP of one rolling off the showroom floor (forced induction not withstanding). Bolt a big wing, full aero kit and big wheels and tires and you will negate most of the benefit of that increase.
So who do you think you are kidding with all the "Boy Racer" junk?

Here's my (least?) favorite-
The people who have the car and don't go to the track, and always have excuses why... The entire car becomes the "faux performance mod".
The rest of the stuff you mentioned really doesn't bother me. To each their own. If the car runs faster laptimes, the modification proved to be a benefit. If not, then hopefully it'll be tuned differently next time...

Maybe JC Whitney will come out with some really effective mods for our S2000s.
I personally won't buy an exhaust for sound value alone. Stock engine/exhaust sound is loud enough so I don't have to worry about silently passing 9000 rpms.
If headers would get me some real HP/torque increase, I'd consider a set, but it seems the HP/$ ratio is not good.
Comptech's Supercharger sounds like the real thing, and I may very well get one if Comptech offers some kind of written warranty.
I would be interested in lighter wheels in original size and offset if they're not only significantly lighter but stronger as well.
Clutch/Flywheel
I'm interested.
My Mods
RM Racing Strut Tower Brace -
in the final analysis, not a really significant increase in stiffness.
Spoon Lower Cross Brace -
Wow!! This is the real deal. Front structure is now STIFF.
Spoon Rear Lower Brace - (not yet installed because of need for modifying brace.)
Rick Hessel Leather Console Cover -
Nice!
Rick Hessel Leather Shift Boot -
Beautiful!
Brookstone Clock, Thermometer, Calendar (illuminated) -
I know what time it is.
MG Racing 3 Piece floor mats -
Just ordered.
MTX 325 Watt Amplifier + Polk 6.5" speakers with adjustable satellite tweeters -
SWEET!
I figure since I paid MSRP I have some change to play around with.
Just my 2 Shekels.

It seems funny to me that you guys can't respect other peoples views.
Some people don't mind spending $1500 on an exhaust whose only measurable difference is the sound. I wouldn't do this personally, but that doesn't make it wrong. Their pleasure comes from knowing they have done something different and a tad more unique.
I also haven't been to a track (yet). I couldn't agree more that the only real place to experience the full potential of this car is on the track, but that's not the major reason I bought it, and I have other priorities in my life at the moment.
So live and let live guys. When you can do what you like, and let others do what they like without you getting upset about it, then you'll really have something to be proud of.

Hi Aus
I don't think anyone is being disrespectful of anyone who has bought an after market exhaust for sound value alone. Posters are simply stating their opinions. Bieg said some pick exhausts which sound faster, and I said I thought the stock sounds good enough. No problem here, don't you think?

I don't think I'm kidding anyone, if you are asking me, Bieg. I actually run the car as it's supposed to be run -- at the race track! I have one of those "exhausts that weigh and perform about the same as stock but SOUND faster" and I'm quite happy with it. I probably ran 13-14 track events this year...how about you?
I'm most certainly not saying that I'm anything special. I have the freedom to do what I want to do with most of my weekends and I chose to spend a lot of them this year at race tracks running the snot out of my car.
I do agree with you in spirit, Bieg. But I also think that people should be able to do whatever they want to do to their cars without ridicule. Not saying you were doing that here, but I don't criticize anyone for their choices....it's all about choices. The more the better...
Nick, amen, brother...! Posers are bores and big wings are for the birds. I say, see you at the track!

Hey guys,
honda_s2k- Why don't you read my post more carefully. I did not say that you had to go to the track to modify your car. In fact, I think I said I did NOT care what people did with their cars. I DID say, now in DIFFERENT WORDS in case you want to misrepresent what I said earlier again, that the car is best experienced on the track, and that my pet peeve are the people who pretend to be track geeks but NEVER show up. And, yes, there are alot of them. Also, a person who installs "performance" parts that take performance away from the car isn't too bright either. I would probably thumb my nose at them too, although it depended if they really cared about that. If all they cared about was looks and sound, then by all means, have fun with it, but don't mix the "all show" crowd with the guys who are interested in better laptimes. I don't fault a person who has different priorities, just the ones who are POSEURS. And yes, I do consider "street racers" to be morons.

I'm not looking for a pissing contest with you or anyone else, believe me!
I thought that you said: 'The people who have the car and don't go to the track, and always have excuses why... The entire car becomes the "faux performance mod".'
I am thrilled that I did not read from you that the "car is best experienced on the track". It's true, however!
Thanks for the clarification!
BTW, I'm very happy that you don't care what people do to their cars.
I feel much better now!
