The fifth to fourth shift
Hi. I think one of the most crucial shifts is the one going from fifth to fourth. The technique on this shift is very important because an error can lead you into second gear.
I find that the best way to go from fifth to fourth is to first guide the shifter into neutral, and then remove my hand, reverse my hand into a backhanded position, and then guide the shifter into fourth. This way I prevent myself from going into second.
How do you do it?

I just lightly pull it back with my fingertips and let the centering springs do their job. IMHO, it is one of the easier shifts.

position your hand over the knob palm down and fingers in front of the knob. knock the knob down into neutral, let the springs center it, and knock it back down into 4th. If you just use your fingers instead of gripping the knob it's faster and easier to do right. btw there's no pause between knocking it into neutral and then down into 4th. do it all in one motion.

Don't try and fight with the shifter - once you know how it behaves, getting int all the gears is easy imo. Going from 5 to 4, just get pressure on the front of the shifter and it will center and go into 4 easily. Don't try and pull it - that's when you work against the springs and end up in 2nd at 70mph.

Too many people man handle the shifter. All it needs is a little left pressure for a shift to 1st or 2nd. A little pressure forward or backwards to allow the centering springs to do their job for 3rd and 4th. A little right pressure for 5th and 6th.
I agree with carlit0sway, the shift to revesre is the hardest!
