Excellent design,

What about a few safety ropes just in case one of the hooks gets loose?

I'd breath easier if I knew it wouldn't hit the ground if it were disturbed.

Thanks, Woodwork!

For long-term winter storage, I'm planning on adding just that - one padded rope under the front section, and one that wraps the pins, and attaching them to the garage joists. That should hold even if the entire hoist gives way. Paranoid enough for ya?

How difficult is it to raise the top? Does it take a lot of effort to pull it to the ceiling?

I had a Jeep Wrangler and a similar rig to get the hardtop off. It was so difficult to actually raise the top that I gave up on the hoist and ended up inviting friends over to help. Granted, the Wrangler hardtop was bigger and heavier, but the hoist wasn't worth having.

Also, how hard is it to line it up when lowering it?

You've really thought this thing through. I'm going to copy your ideas when I get my top. Thanks for the reply and the good ideas.

I'm working on getting a parts list and measurements together. Give me a week or two - I'll be doing it when I go out to finish cleaning out the garage and before my car gets put away for the winter.

If anyone else has tried building a hoist similar to this, I would much appreciate any information you might wish to share as I would like to build one & find that I'm not smart enough to figure everything out w/o help.
