I thought it was more like 4-8hp but 15-18hp when coupled with single exhaust

I think it's 7-16whp coupled with a good exhaust. I could be wrong though.

stock car vs car with just TP is probably in the 7whp range. if you have i/e and you add a test pipe, you can get into the teens with the whp gains, ON TOP of the gains you had from i/e.

the chances of you getting caught ANYWHERE, period, is extremely low.

i'd be much more worried about having 1) tints (in certain states) 2) expired tags, registration, etc.

Has ANYONE on this board EVER been caught having one? Every TP thread there seems to be someone trying to use "there is a big fine" to debate against having one.

The only way I can see someone getting caught is if they are stupid enough to show up at an inspection with one. It takes <20min to switch out in a garage (as long as your bolts are in good shape).

Sorry, but me running a test pipe or not will not decide the future of the environment. 100 people running a test pipe will not decide the future of the environment.

Massive factories, trucks, machinery, etc all have a huge impact on the environment vs a 4 cylinder with a test pipe.

so in answer to the question, not really anything at all. nor do I care.

but if you don't want to run one, then don't. but don't force your tree hugging tendencies on us. in fact, why drive a car at all? you should bike everywhere. oh and stop using all sorts of manufactured things like plastic and clothes and in fact, do you know the pollution caused in manufacturing gasoline? You should stop using that too. Oh and don't use computers anymore either, including the one you use to post on the internet. lots of pollution caused by all the manufacturing and shipping of the parts in your computer too. i could go on and on, but i think you understand how ridiculously insignificant this test pipe vs nature thing is.

In CA. there is a smog inspection, to make sure its in working order you must pass the test. ive never seen any smog techs look under the car. however I have been driving behind a car with test pipes, and they stink. so you may get away with until a CHP with a good nose catches you.
California smog inspections include a visual inspection for all equipment.

Some people have taken the heatshields off the stock cat. and put them on the test pipe. But where I live, I'm really not too worried about getting caught.
