One of the dumbest things you can do if you are smoking like crazy under the hood is to pop the hood and lift it.

Lots of oxygen will get to whatever is smoldering and a small fire will become a big one in a split second. You'll get really hot too. Smmmokinnn!

No offense to you but this is irrelevant. He mentioned his car is a daily driver so he wouldnt have to worry about an oil line breaking off.
No offense taken, but I disagree that it's irrelevant. I was posting an example of when having a fire extinguisher handy was a very good thing, even though it wasn't needed. The car was the guy's daily driver as well - it could have happened at any time, although obviously the extra stress from the autocross hastened the failure. Even if the OP doesn't have a turbo with oil fittings that could break, there have been plenty of reports of S2000s driving with missing oil filler caps and improperly installed oil filters that have worked loose. While none of these have led to a fire that I know of, the potential for disaster does exist.

Here's an interesting extinguisher discussion. Car fires do happen, but the basic take on it from the UK guys appears to be that extinguishers aren't effective at putting out car fires. So if smoke starts coming out of the engine bay, your best bet is to simply get away, and let insurance deal with getting you a new car.

(It's also interesting to note how much nicer the UK folks are as well. )

Here's a pic from steve c of a car fire resulting from an accident.

Some discussion of engine fires NOT happening in S2000s.

You do realise we drive Japanese cars, not British cars, right? Have you had problems with cars burning in the past? I can't see why you even need a fire extinguisher, but why not just buy a small bottle and mount it in front of the passenger seat behind the crossmember that sticks up?

And for the record, I don't keep any valuable documents in my car.
Note mention that a fire extinguisher mounted in an S would just look corny.

If you're THAT worried about catching your car on fire, quit smoking while driving drunk, or move to Seattle.

hahaa, laughatrice .com! Just get one of the small ones and tuck it under your seat if you insist on having one. I just discovered the US car has a road flare in it, hidden in the Passenger Kick panel. Maybe you could take the same initiative?
If my car cought on fire - I'd let it burn. Just one more excuse to keep me safe - and get another Car.

There are reasons to carry a fire extinguisher in your car other than protecting the car...your life and your passengers life.

My friend lost his brother because of a car fire. My friend fell asleep behind the wheel one night, crashed into a tree and his brother was in the passenger seat. His brother was pinned inside the car and it caught on fire. My friend tried to pull his brother out and got 3rd degree burns on both arms trying to pull him out. His brother burned to death that night and all could have been prevented if they had a fire extinguisher.

Ever since that night I have kept a fire extinguisher in every one of my cars and my gf's car. I keep it mounted under my seat in my other car. I haven't found a place to mount one in my S yet though but I will have one.

Call it rice if you want, but I don't keep one in my car for looks.
