If you didn't call the cops and have a police report filed...you may be liable for your own damages. Without a police report in many cases...it's on your insurance company.

A good cop would be able to assess the blame on the person responsible for the pile up, especially if there was a non-involved witness. You are not always liable just because you run into the back of someone although you are more likely to be blamed for it if you do.

Drive defensively and this won't happen.

If your ABS is not working and you stand on the brakes one or more tires is going to lock up and skid....if that did not happen then your ABS is probably fine, you just didn't hit the brakes hard enough to lock the wheel (a plus to running wide, grippy tires.
