First Impressions from my migration from S2000 -> M3
My buddy just got a 02 Carbon black M3 (6spd).....came out of a TT 225 convertible. He loves it, misses the feel of a 2 seat convertible but doesn't regret the trade at all.
I had a 95 M3 (00 Mcoupe briefly)-found that it would make a great everyday primary car, but there are other cars I would have chosen as a weekend rocket. Don't know if the E46 would be any different.
Great car though, congrats.

Congrats on your purchase.
Just hope your engine holds together!!

I will wait until there is proof that the engine is at least as bulletproof as the F20C. Right now I don't feel confident that it is.

Hi
Some answers to your comments:
1) Autocross/Tossability: I don't really do any autocross. If I do anything it's Solo1 and some lapping and as you know the M3 really shines on this. Of course the larger size hurts tossability slightly but I think it's still pretty agile/nimble at low speeds given enough throttle input.
2) Which one is more fun for that little trip to the grocer? Well the S2000 sure had it's merits there, and I have to agree that for a small trip the S2000 was great. But when taking the long way it's pretty equal..
3) Looks.. Much more looks in the S2000. This weekend, I had maybe 5 people comment on the car to me. When I picked up my S2000, I had double to triple the attention. The M3 isn't a really 'in your face car' like the S2000.. That was a great aspect of the S2000 if you liked attention.
4) Engine problems: Yes this worries me.. Quite a few people have complained about engine's blowing up.. The S2000's weak link in reliability was the transmission/driveline.. The M3's seem to have a faulty computer that allows the engine to over-rev and blow.. The jury is still not out on if it's really a factory problem or it's people just taking the car to hard and missing downshifts, etc (similar to what happened when the type-r came out)....
Thanks for all the kudos and I am glad that people are becoming a bit more positive to people who post messages like mine (ie: "go away to the bmw board")
If there are any S2000 gathering in Montreal I would still love to meet up.. We can do some acceleration tests by next week when the engine is broken in.. Also for anyone in the Montreal area there is a lapping day at Ste-Eustache (auto sin may) may 19th for 100$

Very informative & objective I thought. There are certainly those browsing our board that may be considering both. I did. The two factors that had the largest impact on my decision was that the S just "fit" me & cost. I drove a White/Blk convertible M3 vs. my White/Red S. Both are great drivers cars. They make their drivers
for a myriad yet different reasons. Your $.02 as a previous S owner is always welcome in my opinion.

Rob, congrats and thanks for your info! Just quick questions about suspension: you mentioned M3's suspension seems to be stiffer than S2000's? I think I read an article that said it was less stiffer than S2000 (forget which article it was now but it actually compared the two vehicles just on the ride quality). How is the ride quality compared with S? More bumpier?
P.S. Have you considered getting the convertible version? I read that the M3 convertible is prone to chassis noises (because of not enough stiffness)? Not mention more expensive and heavier? I see few of them around where I live and they look pretty darn good.
Thanks in advance.

I love the new M3. If I needed a daily driver, that's what I'd get (the extra $55K is a deterant). $20K is a big step up but I guess there isn't much else in that range (Boxster S or Z06 maybe). If I wanted a track car I'd get the Z06, all around better car -- on the track. If I paid $55K for a car I'd expect it to be worth same as compared to a $35K one. $20K is also a big price to pay for a transmission that doesn't grind now and then. To each their own. I guess if I had that kind of money I'd strongly consider it as a good all around car. Since I don't, the issue is moot for me. The 911 Turbo is a better car than the M3. What not get that? Can't afford a $125K car? Imagine that...
Enjoy your new ride

Congrats Rob, the sweet sound of the 6 reving to 8000 RPMs must be fun.
Let's hook up soon.
BTW, My "Race-Rex" (CRX) is now ready for racing, we were at a performance driving school in ottawa yesterday, sticks like glue with those R compounds on 13x7 panasports.
