Found out that the rear lights are practically useless in fog

Last Saturday, S2WOOOW, Strike and myself drove down to the WLA meet through the twisties in the mountains along Mulholland Hwy. Until that drive, I had never before followed behind another S2K and seen the taillights on, or the turn lights blinking. However, near the 2000' mark, the mist was so thick that visibility was down to 30' for long stretches of the road. At that point, I realized very quickly that in any kind of mist or fog our taillights are really pathetic - to the point where they are almost useless. They may be fine for regular nighttime driving, but totally inadequate in fog or mist.

Even in areas where there's a good deal of mist or ground fog, I'll bet most people haven't given a thought to how effective, or otherwise their taillights are performing. When you look at them at night, I'm sure you think they seem just fine - but you've probably never considered getting out of the car and looking at them when you're surrounded by thick fog. If the S2K ever needed a safety mod, it's definitely rear fog lights.

If you get the chance, also check out your rear turn signal lights when it's foggy. You won't believe what a wimpy yellow glow they give off. In fact, both the brake and signal lights are so bad, I'm considering replacing them with either colored or hyper white bulbs I found at this web site: http://www.nextcollection.com/html/lbu-Lig...ht~bulbs-Signal,Corner,Tail~and~accessories~bulbs-none-none-none.cfm

For anyone interested, Euro S2Ks have a rear fog light that might make a good addition to the lower lip, seen here in biker1's post in Photo Gallery:

Has anyone else noticed how inadequate our rear lights are in adverse weather conditions, such as fog or mist? I think you'd be as amazed as I was.

The thing is, in thick fog, most cars' tail lights are useless, not just the stook. Generally there's a regulation on how bright the parking lights must be. So it's going to be more or less a universal problem.

I have actually been thinking of a rear fog -- not to be tacky but it is much easier to see cars even in the rain with a rear fog. I like the security factor that it provides. 911 owners used to add aftermarket rear fogs to the 70's and 80's models because the rear lights where "dim" and rear fogs didn't come from the factory -- this isn't only true with 911s but many other Euro cars from the 70s and 80s.

I really like the S2000 rear fog -- it is nice to have the rear fog as a separate versus as part of your rear light assembly -- when it is part, many folks will tell you, "your rear left light is going bad, it is really bright..." "I know, I know..."

Whoever (biker1?) it was that posted the original picture above from the UK, posted some prices for the different parts -- in pounds, however.

I am guessing you could do one of two things if you wanted to add:

1. Buy all of the components and cut a whole in the lower valence

2. Buy all the components and the lower valence -- then you could return to stcok fairly easy

Who wants to organize a group buy?

Here is a blurry pic of my friend's s2000 with the fog light on (not very foggy BTW...)

It's mandatory in Europe to have one, and you feel much more secure in extreme condition knowing people behind you actually see you...

Yes I did! I'm glad you agree that the rear fog light is a practical addition to our car. It's only when you follow behind another S2K in bad weather that you can judge the effectiveness (or ineffectiveness) of our rear lights.

Wouldn't be very useful in my neck of the woods; we have more tornadoes than fog.
