Friend Looking to buy 02 S2000
HI everyone, I took my friend to a small s2k meet yesterday, and now he really wants one for himself. I was hoping for some insight to see if this car is really a decent price.
It is a 2002 Black s2k with 50k miles on it. Interior and exterior are very clean (couple scratches on the paint that dealer claims they can buff out). It is mostly stock, with some AVS (not sure) wheels and a voodoo shift knob. We both drove it, felt strong to me all the way to 9k rpm.
The rear tires all almost done, but the dealer is offering to replace them with the sale. The airbox has a bunch of holes drilled into the front side, not really sure why. I am guessing he was hoping for more air intake, but my friend will probably be replacing the intake anyways within a year so it shouldn't matter too much. The clutch felt like it grabbed towards the very top of the pedal travel, so I wonder how much clutch is left before a replacement. It also has the beginnings of the wear on both sides of the interior of the soft top (will a small leather patch on the inside maybe prevent it from wearing all the way through?)
The dealer ran a carfax for us and it only has had one owner, supposedly an older man, and is clean.
The sticker price was 18.9 k, but they are offering him 16.5k with a replacement of the rear tires. After taxes and dealership charge it is about 18.5k. KBB value is 20,540 so it seems to me to be a decent deal.
What do you guys think and are there any other common 02 problems I should be checking for? I did hear the clutch buzz when I drove it but I remembered that being a common problem with ap1's.

I got my MY02 with 22k miles for $19k with extended hondacare warrenty until the end of 2008 or 100,000 miles. It was a private sale.
So for the same year with 50k miles and a worn top, some aftermarket parts and you don't even know the first owner..
That's way too much. I'd pay $15k for it out the door.
Absolute max - $15,500

$16.5k doesn't sound too bad, but I personally would be a little worried about that clutch. Sounds like the previous owner made some other questional mods (airbox, and wheels *if* they don't have the proper offset) so I wonder if something's been done to the clutch as well?
What size/model tires are on it right now? (Both front and back.) The dealer isn't likely to put the proper tire on, so your friend might be better of negotiating a lower price, pick up a set of used AP1 wheels (I've seen a set for as low as $200) and putting OEM S02 tires on.

you'll want to check the clutch, tires, and softtop.......those are going to be the wear items at this point in the game......that should be a big factor in the price point because none of those are cheap
Depending where you live it could be a good deal. If your in an area that winter will soon be taking over for 5-6 months then a better deal may be possible to get it off the lot before snow flies.
