Default Front License Plate - California

Do I need a front license plate under California law? Won't this hurt the performance? If I need a plate on front I'm moving to another state - I bet Nevada is good!

Hi! Welcome to the board It would be best to do a search. There are several threads on this topic including plate issues in CA and other states.

What it boils down to is that - by law yes you need a front plate. Many on this board (including myself) have been running without front plates on a variety of vehicles and have never been stopped/cited. It is a risk. However, to me, it makes such a difference in the look of my S2K that I will gladly take that risk

No plate on mine. I've had my "Trouble" since April 2000 and have put 7k miles on him without any kind of ticket.

I haven't had a front plate on any car I've registered in California since the Morris Minor I owned in '64 and I've never had a ticket or had it questioned, even when I was stopped for some other alleged infraction.

Knocking on wood.

When I lived in So Cal, I always had my front plate in my window. However, keep in mind that an officer can use that as a reason to pull you over even if just to harrass you. If you do get a ticket for it, just put it on and go to the CHP and they'll write it off, then take the ticket to the court house and get it dismissed.

california law changed in regard to having no front plate. it is no longer a $10-15 fix-a-ticket. it is now a $76 ticket.

I've never been hassled about the lack of front plates on both my cars since I bought the first one in 1997. Even when I've been pulled over for other "infractions", I've never been questioned about it.

I've had a few policeman in VA come in to take a close look at my S2K and (2) have mentioned "Will this thing really go 9-grand" and "no plate?". My respose both times time was, "yes" and "I can't bring myself to do it.... and?". They normally chuckle and go on their way.
