Default Fuel Gauge Question

Here is the deal:

I am installing a stereo (thanks darknight)! Well I pulled the whole interior and dynamtted and ran wire accordingly. When I started the car in the middle of interior re-install I noticed I had no bars and gas light was on. So I threw a gallon of gas in there and drove to the gas station to fill the rest. When I started the car after FILLING it up the gas light was STILL on and still had no bars. Im wondering what could cause this and if anyone knows where I should look? Any help or insight is greatly appreciated
