The three brands I trust: 76, Mobil, and Chevron, in any order. And I would usually switch off on every fill up.
Not a fan of Shell or any of the other brands.

I think something like this happened not too long ago in the US as well. A friend of my had some problems with his gas gauges in his RSX. He was a frequent Shell customer.

It would be helpful if someone with expertise in distribution and testing would weigh in here, rather than limited personal observations. I would suspect that brands with some control over refining would produce better consistency. I would be more concerned with contaminant levels such as sulfur rather than additives.
Any of the top brands have stringent controls over refining.
We are all driving high performing, high rev'ing, and high compression vehicles, so don't go cheap.
