Default Gear Whine!

i know a lot of people have gear whine, but in addition to the hum/whine sound, does it mean that a problem is imminent? my gear whines when decelerating and also while i'm cruising and not on the gas. is this normal?

my main question is: does the gear whine mean that the ring and pinion are not sitting 100% perfectly together? and if so does it mean that you will eventually run into problems? or is it just a noise and doesn't mean that other problems are on the way?

thanks

I found this on another thread. It is in the FAQ section of under the hood. If this is what you are talking about I get this also. If you look around a little on here you can find the TSB that he is talking about.

I hope this helps.

*19. When I decelerate past about 4500 rpm, there is this rattling sound. It's awful and embarassing. What's wrong with my car?
-- NOTHING! It's the well known "clutch deceleration buzz". Honda has a TSB on this for the earlier model year cars, but even the newer models can produce this buzz. It's just a noise and doesn't mechanical affect the car in a bad way. It will NOT blow up because of it. You have caused it NO damage.

I had a lot of gear noise and buzzing coming from the tranny area until I put on the Beatrush front & rear performance bars for a different reason, which had the pleasant side effect of quieting down all that buzzing and tranny noise, both during decel around 3k and also at steady state on the fwy.

Yeah, I have this rattling noise on deceleration or hold the throttle at a lower gear when the RPM is high. For instance, if I keep it in a lower gear, 3rd, and accelerate, but don't shift and hold it for a while it will make this rattle noise, buzz.

do you still have the same amount of whine if you replaced the short shifter with OEM?

if its a whine...especially from the rear. its your diff. mine was whining awhile ago, and it just kept getting louder and louder.

i had to replace the diff eventually. Ive heard some stories where people are actually having their diffs blow while driving, so i would get it checked out.

ding ding ding! we have a winner!

haha i'm talking about the sound from the DIFF. i forgot to mention the VERY important fact that these are my observations right after getting my 4.77s installed

i know 100% it is gear whine from the 4.77s. so my question is: does the gear whine mean that the ring and pinion are not sitting 100% perfectly together? and if so does it mean that you will eventually run into problems? or is it just a noise and doesn't mean that other problems are on the way?

thanks!

do a little reading on helical cut and straight cut gears with respect to the final drive......you might just find your answer

the whine is nothing more than the price you pay for have a gear that is built more towards strength and performance than comuter driveability

thanks! this is what i was looking for. if the whine is a side effect of the gear being engineered more for performance and strength then i 100% don't mind the whine
