As many of you know, there is a snap-out plastic panel under the dash on the passenger side. I've started fooling around with that space and the plastic piece to see if there's a reasonable way to put it on hinges, add a lock, and add a storage space behind it. I'm quite sure it can be made to work, although the storage space would not be very large -- about 8 inches wide and maybe 1 1/2 to 2 inches deep -- enough for some maps or a few pairs of sunlasses.

I've got a few extra panels on order to experiment with, and I'll post if and when I have any progress to report.

BTW, this idea was suggested early in the history of this board, but I never pursued it and I guess no one else did as well. It may be futile, but at least we'll give it go. Given that storage space is at a premium and not eaily accessible when you're driving, something in this space would be really convenient, I think.

Hey, if it works out and looks good, and provides extra space, I might buy one... The car really seems like it "should" have a glovebox there. I hate the secret compartment, its so difficult to access.

i would definitely be down for one too. i think that would be a great idea if you could go through with it. if it does come to fruition i would need somebody to help me install modifry's redline warning module before the storage box goes in...i still haven't been able to complete that task

I installed his mod. Did you download his PDF file?

http://www.baustnet.com/honda/mods/shift/Redline.pdf

I hope this storage box mod doesn't interfere with the redline module, Rick?

Hey Rick -

I too have tinkered with this idea. My first application was attaching a CD/paper/misc. holder made out of cheap materials that was intended to go on a standard visor. The one I am sporting now is a leather bag with a flap that I designed and sewed myself. Looks pretty good and the leather I used has a grain very similar to the grain of the dash above it. I have about 8 CD jewels in there along with some other stuff. The good thing about the leather is that it stretches and is collapsible when not in use - more knee room for the passenger (none have complained with the "glove bag" full either).

I made it so you can bring the car back to original spec without damaging the plastic cover...

Let me know if anybody is interested in my design...
