Going from 245/40/17 to 255/40/17 on an 06
Has anyone went up one size on the width on their rear tires? Any adverse changes to the handling? Does it look odd on the car from the side? In fact, I found that the 255"s are bit cheaper.
Thanks!
Thanks!
It's fine, a lot of people have done it. The AP2 wheels are plenty wide to hold 255's. It may make the car slightly more understeer prone, but this can be counteracted by bumping the fronts up to 225's.
I went to 255s in the back first keeping the 215s up front, and with all that added traction in the back I was able to decimate the fronts pretty quickly due to the understeer. Now I have 225s up front and it feels pretty good.
I jumped on the tirerack deal for the RE050A pp's for 255's in the rear while keeping the stock RE050 215 in the front. I can't say I liked what happened to the feel of the car at the track but it does stick a bit more. The front does tend to push but you can lower the tire pressure a couple of lbs to somewhat fix the understeer.
If I was to choose again, I would go with stock 245's. Otherwise I would have picked up 225's front and 255's rear RE050A's and got that $100 off for SCCA members deal. (potenza.com)
The CR setup is what tipped me into this as well but I think the RE070's are a bit different and pair that up with the CR alignment spec (which has to be different based on the suspsension revisions) and you have something we can't get to right now. I will be getting the CR alignment as soon as it becomes available.

General rule of thumb with staggered setups is that the wider the back in proportion to the front, the more understeer. You can dial out some of that understeer by either increasing the width of your front tire or decreasing the width of the rear tire. Some people who track the car increase the width of the front tire to even out the handling and some even go to a non-staggered setup (this way, they can rotate the tires as well).
I think having a big rear tire looks badass too but looks aside, be sure to consider the handling characteristics as well. If you like how the stock tire sizes handle now, then keep the same F/R ratio when upgrading your tires.
