The worst of it is slightly lower mpg than if you had stock gears.
Is this a proven fact? Reason why I'm asking is, an ITR owner w/ 4.9 gears reported BETTER gas mileage on highway commutes than the stock gears. The theory was, even though you're at a higher RPM, more torque (at higher RPM) made it easier to cut through the aero resistance.

I'd be curious to see what this owner reports back.

Last summer in June, I went from Boise Idaho to Sacramento California and back for SacS2KDays V with a SC and 4.77's. I averaged 26 MPG over 2200 miles.
You don't have anything to worry about.

I agree, I just drove to Va from PA and back, On the way down it was raining and I don't like the S02s in the rain so I did the speed limit 65-70 ( painfull) got 25 mpg. On the way back the sun was out and I did 80mph @ 5,100 rpm and there was a period that a Wrx and Rx7 tried to make a sandwich of me and we were at 110 for a while, despite all that I got 27 MPG . This car loves to rev

Well last year when I took this trip, I had the stock gears. It was around 50-60 degrees in weather. With the top down, the car averaged 29mpg going 75-85 non-stop. With top up, it averaged 32mpg. And another time I drove for a while, it was warmer weather, had the top up with ac on and it averaged 27mpg. I hope I get close to 30 but I don't think its likely this time with the gears. But at as long as their is no harm to the engine, thats what matters.

You might want to slow down. There are a lot of cops out on patrol during the holidays.

Only reason to slow down is the cops. Just keep it out of vtec and your mpg will be good.

With your gears, what are your RPMS at 70 mph and 80 mph? I was always curious as those are my common cruising speeds on the highway and I have been thinking gears lately.

Actually... at night is the worst time to speed because there are no dumby cars in front of you for the cop to target to make you radar go off. If you speed at night and you're alone, when the cop targets you, your radar will go off but the cop already has you caught. I learned this over the weekend driving out to Penn. My Valentine One works wonders but only when there were dumby cars in front of me. When there was no one, I kept the speed conservative doing 75 in the 65 zones. Saved me everytime though, I have to say.
