Goodbye to the 'beater' car?
Well folks... I don't know what to do...
In a couple of months there will be one year since I got my S. From then I'm still using my beater car to go to work and move on in the city (not too much). Madrid, in Spain is the typical old-european city... narrow streets, terrific jammed traffic, no places to park... almost every time new dings and dents in every parking...
That's why I mantainted my tiny-crappy beater car 1988 Renault 5 GTL (lots of pics around the web), an indestructible million-seller car here in "ye olde world", wich I bought for 700 Euro ($700) two years ago...
In this last year with the S, i've enjoyed a lot. I've made 10K kilometers, (+-6,2 miles) and made long trips around the country, every one more pleasurable than the last... I've put it to 258 Km/h (160,3 mph) and drive even in highways and mountain roads... Let's say: I'm enjoying and "living" my S in its full range. :-)
But in the "day by day" i'm living in the crappy beatear car. It smells bad, the mpg in not big and I spend "hours" trying to find a place to park in the streets around the block. (The S is in the garage)
From monday to friday is the same: a 15 minute travel with no traffic jam, (my workplace is outside the city) 8-9 hours parked outside in a non very used road and then return to the center of Madrid.
Does it worth to let de S stay in the garage like if it were a gem, only to avoid this dayly exterior exposing?
Here is a pic of the street (sometimes, a few ones, i go with it)
Well... should I get rid of the beater car? I'm tired of have two cars... With the Porsche 944 was the same... Finally I believe that I could enjoyed more that 944 than in the 5 years I had it... And the only reason in both situations is "to protect the 'good' car".
Driving the beater car every day, I feel like a dumb or like a nerd.
Does it worth?

I think it may be worth it to get rid of the beater.
After all, you didn't pay too much for it in the first place.
And later, if your S starts to take a beating, I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find a new beater.

My beater is an S4 (chipped and lowered) and I don't mind that I drive the S2K on the non-rainy weekends and autox. If I go out to the city, I take the 'beater'. I'm not sure why but I worry more about parking the S2K in a public place than the S4 even though it costs 13K more. You are definitely not dumb or a nerd.
definitely keep the beater around. another thing you have to watch out for when parking the S in the street is vandalism from jealous types. I got mine debadged, dented, and keyscratched in the first year in Germany.
