DAMN IT! I want to s/c my car but things like this scare me. Is it just vortech kit? What about SOS, or turbo?

K series with an s/c seem to hold up forever. Even full race kits with a gt30. Did the vortech kit grenade? Or did the motor blow?

BTW Sweet BMW!!!! Those things are insane!

Most people have zero issues. The S is super reliable supercharged! I would not worry about it in any way!! Just don't cheap out on it!

That's a beauty of a change man, welcome to the realm of German engineering. I retired my s2 into storage as well a couple years ago and got a C63 in place of it. Much more power and comfort but still a couple times a year I will revive the old s2 and take it for a spin, puts a smile on my face everytime.

Thanks so much for all the well wishes guys. The S2000 has the best community of any car because the kind of people who understand such a car are just inherently awesome. I will always believe that, and I'm definitely keeping the S for sunny days!

Oh, I went with the SMG because that's what they use on F1 cars, and since the V10 is basically a detuned mid-90's F1 motor, it seemed Proper.

It's not an automatic. Basically it's a high-tech clutchless manual that does perfect rev-matching throttle blips when you downshift. You can run it in an auto mode, but it sucks that way. I shift just like it's a manual and it's much smoother. Great fun with the little paddle shifters - feels like a videogame.

Nice, you sure know how to upgrade. The 6 is an awesome ride.

I know some people prefer traditional manual gearbox, but I LOVE the BMW SMG trans. I almost pulled the trigger on buying an M3 w/ SMG, absolute blast to drive. Plus you can cruise in auto when you're feeling lazy; best of both worlds. For those that are unfamiliar, SMG does have a clutch, but doesn't have the pedal.

Yep, I'm a total Manual tranny nut, but SMG is the future. The main advantage is that perfect downshift ability. *Every* spin I ever had in my S was caused when, as I downshifted, I didn't match the revs right and caused the rear to destabilize as I let in the clutch. It's just damn hard to do as you heel-and-toe while you brake.

I would normally see the SMG as some sort of crutch, but that logic just doesn't work in this case. You might as well call radial (vs. bias ply) tires a "crutch". It's not that - it's just the future. If F1 uses it - it's Proper.

Still, I love the purity of my S2000 and its wonderful 6-speed

have you purchased the m6 yet? i hope you like the smg more then i liked it in the m3. I literally thought the transmission was broken.

keep us posted on your thoughts compared to the S. I tried to move away from the s2000 2 times and by the time i purchased my last one (3rd) decided that i would just keep it.

I love the SMG, but you have to invest a little effort. Also a lot of people aren't familiar with the auto clutch-adjustment procedure. If you adjust the take-up (as the clutch wears), it shifts much more smoothly. BMW did a poor job of communicating this "secret" feature (in case you're wondering, you put the SMG in neutral and activate both up- and downshift paddles simultaneously for a few secs as you coast).

Anyway - the SMG is absolutely superior to any manual transmission in either a drag race, or (especially) a road course. This entire debate was played out in the early 90's in F1, with the result that all F1 cars by 1994 had SMG's.

Hopefully I got a good car and it won't be too expensive to maintain (in reference to the "well-wisher" above). At least it'll be worth it...

Compared to the S, the handling feels much more safe and predictable. Of course, that's on the street. On a road course, they're about equal - although the electronic aids on the M6 give me far more consistent lap times. That having been said, the S2000 was always meant for experts. It's one of the few - and possibly the last - cars that demands a lot of skill. It reminds me of an 80's 911. In the hands of an expert - incredible. Anyone else - you're likely to leave the road backwards. It's not for novices, and you have to love that.

For me, the M6 is (I'm sorry) vastly superior in terms of driving dynamics. It should be - it costs $109k. But I will always love and respect the S2000 for its totally uncompromising approach, its ability to punch above its weight and take out cars with vastly better power/weight ratios.
