Well it had to happen, it always does . Someone backed in to my rear passenger side bumper today at work. I didn't see it happen but two co-workers saw it. Where I park there is a single row for employees, that has spaces for about seven cars, and one entry. Basically its a one entrance, single lane with parking spots to pull into. The Entry is marked with a big sign that says employees only.
So anyway, this woman with a big pickup, reese hitch etc..., ignores the employees only parking sign, pulls in and decides to try and find an empty parking spot. I have no idea why she would even pull in, anyone could tell immediately that none of the seven parking spots were open and pull back out. There was also a mail truck parked in the parking lot lane, not to mention there is a big parking lot 25 feet behind the employee spaces. She decides to not only pull in squeezing by the mail truck, but she then gets the bright idea to completely turn her monster truck around instead of backing out, at which point she backs into my bumper. .
She stops, noticing that she hit something tries going again narrowly missing my car again and speeds out. Ah, but someone wrote down your tag number. After debating wether I should make a police report, I get convinced by everyone to file a report just incase. The officer shows up and we find out the truck is registered to a man, presumably the person in the passengers seat from descriptions, who has a felony warrant out for his arrest. This of course perks the officers interest. He says that although the damage is minor in my case he hates when someone hits a parked car and just leaves. He goes on to say that it is considered felony hit and run in Florida. So now the guy in the truck has two felony arrest warrants out for him and the driver his wife, now also has a felony arrest warrant out for her. The officer said that she will probably have to spend 30-60 days in jail. I kinda feel sorry for her since the damage is minor a few scuff marks and a small ding, but all she had to do was come in and say I'm sorry I backed in to a car instead of just taking off, and she could have avoided alot of trouble.
Same happened to me at a theatre. The damage is minor, just a penny size scratch on and near the tow hook cover. Touch-up really doesn't fix it, but I'll have to live with it for now. I have no idea who did it. Eventually, I think a MY04 bumper is in order.
Anyway, that type of behavior is just completely unacceptable. She knew she damaged property, and unless she is a total idiot, someone witnessed it as people were in view. This behavior is the same as someone walking into your house when you are not home and breaking a TV. I guess she wasn't punished before, but she needs to be to KNOW that she can't do that kind of stuff. Now it looks like she's got a hard lesson to learn as she is going to be a convicted felon. Sure, it's too bad for her, but she has to be responsible for what she did.
In college, I hit a car in a campus lot. No witnesses. It was really just a scratch, but I went to the campus police and reported myself and drove with the officer to the car. They had never seen anyone do that, which is sad really. The person I hit called me later to thank me for doing what I did. As it was probably a $200 claim, the insurance didn't go up...in fact they thought it was admirable I reported it and I never got a rate increase; the opposite is true actually.
I agree. Screw 'em. It's just common courtesy to try to locate the owner who's property you just ed up. When people just assume they'll get away with it and it's OK because no one saw them, they deserve everything they get. It's just not acceptable in modern society to just up and split. I hope they catch them and lock them up. Minor offense or not, it's indicative of their low-class redneck attitude and if they did it to you, they'll just as soon do it to someone else.
I'm glad you reported it. Somebody vandalized my car w/ a baseball bat and this kind of stuff has to stop. People need to be responsible for their actions!
I feel the same way as everyone else, they get what they deserve. My window was broken in an apartment parking lot, I believe by kids with a baseball. Probably an accident. Anyway, I don't find out until I leave at around 2am. I got the shaft, a $300 bill for the glass, $80 bill for the tint, and a royal pain in my arse. You can just see the damage in this pic on the right side of the windshield. I tried not to catch it when photographing.
I don't disagree with reaming them per the law in this case. I wonder, though, if you'll have any difficulty establishing that it was the owner's wife that was actually driving. How are you going to do that? Did your coworkers see her? They , uh , did right???
Slightly different situation: I had a guy hit my parked S and even though he admitted to being there, and a big gouge in my bumper, the police said it couldn't be considered hit & run as there were no witnesses. Is that retarded or what? I guess in theory he could have not realized he backed into my car twice. I have a Z shaped trailer hitch gouge ( I did collect from hime though, using small claims threat).
My s has been knicked twice in 4 months of ownership and no one left a note, no apologies, all I got was the repair bill. People just have no respect for anyone or anything anymore. And as for the guy who owned up to his error earlier in the thread.....bravo! If you would have scuffed my car I would have offered to pay for part of if not all of the damage myself just because you were so civil about the whole thing. It's not the money, it's the respect that matters.
Owned mine for a whole week and parked it way out in the parking lot where no other cars parked... somebody parked next to me and when I was walking out of the store they were getting back into their car and I heard them bang my Passenger side door. Left a good scratch, chipped my paint and left some of their red paint on it... they drove off pretty quick, and I didn't get their plate number...
If people were accountable for their actions they wouldn't park next to you in 'china' and then scratch your door or pull stunts like that lady pulled in your employee lot!
I had somebody here at work back into my S. They ruined the driver fender and I had to paint the hood as well. It cost me $950, out of my own pocket. I was pissed!
