That sucks dude, glad you're ok though. Definitely save those wheels and do it all over again. My guess is its a total, but that's all up to the insurance companies.

Speaking of insurance companies, good luck with them and let us know how it goes. I bet that her insurance company will try to say that it's your fault because you were turning left, and she was going straight. Yours will say it's her fault because she was illegally in the middle lane (the right call if you ask me). Just give your statement and let them fight it out, that's their job, not yours.

What a dumb ass. People are just so painfully careless cause they're always in a rush for no reason and things like this happen. If I were you I wouldn't have been able to stay calm at all, so kudos to you for doing so. Very sorry to see this.

Talked to my insurance today and fortunately the cop wrote it up as her fault so there won't be much argument. Just gotta wait until they can assess the damage.

That looks rough man but at least you're alright. I know I would be beyond pissed at myself, the lady, the world if that happened to me. Hopefully they don't total your car and just repair it.
If they do repair it, do I have the right to ask for cash to account for the loss in value of the car? The KBB on it in the shape it was in was $18-18.5k but there's no way I could ask that after this.
Do you have the right to ask? YES. Chances of actually getting some compensation? Pretty bad in most cases.

I made an attempt at this, supposedly you are entitled to diminished value on your vehicle in order to restore you to your condition before the accident. It just so happens the chances of getting it from big chain insurances are not good. My car got hit while it was parked - by a third party (had all original VIN tags, original paint in excellent shape, and perfect carfax). I asked their insurance for small cash compensation for diminished value, and after 3 months of promises and calls got completely stonewalled. I provided them with the exact evidence they said they needed in order to send my payment, then they dragged it out a few weeks and closed my claim.
The paintwork repairs weren't the same as before either, but were deemed "industry standard" and insurance refused to pay for a front end repaint to get the color consistent. They just blended the new replaced fender, so my once consistent paint color isn't so consistent anymore. It was a horrible, horrible experience. I'd ask for diminished value for sure (you absolutely take a loss in resale value for someone else's mistake) but wouldn't expect much. Who knows though, maybe they have a good insurance company...

Really sorry to hear this happened, best of luck with it.

PS - I did loads of research on this, and a few people have gotten a check for diminished value... It does happen sometimes. Unfortunately, a few examples I remember that did were on an NSX, Lotus Exige, and Porsche 911 - you never know though, depends a lot on the company too.

Recently I went through just a claim due to a lady in a truck backing up into my car in a STOP sign. Insurance ended up replacing hood, headlight, front bumper, left fender -- all together, labors & OEM Parts, $3,500.

If you add left door, suspensions, and other accessories to yours, and assuming there's no frame bending damage, you could be looking at $5K - $6K of damage. Hard to see that being totaled by the insurance.

Yeah, I'm guessing around 8-9k if the frame isn't bent. I'm hoping I'll find out by the middle of next week.
