got owned by shopping cart today
I work at a grocery store, I worry constantly about shopping carts. I have learned there are far better places to park to lessen the potential for shopping cart damage.
Park next to the cart returns if they are empty as people tend to push the carts in and will be less likely to be lazy and leave them sitting around near other cars. Also, park in areas where the wind could not blow them against your car. This means to either park way out in the lot right next to a curb (also lessens the potential for door dings) or park in the little alcoves that some grocery stores have that have very few shopping carts near them. Hope this helps!
Also, some stores have insurance for this type of thing and may cover the damage outright (not for employees though). It is worth a shot at least so that you don't have to pay to get it fixed...

I once witnessed someone hit a shopping cart on purpose and it hit someone elses car. They got out laughing and went in to walmart.
I told my wife to hang on, and I got like 50 carts cliped them together and put them around their car, all the way around. I wish I could have seen their faces.
