Amsterdam is a really special place. The people in Amsterdam are so friendly and they know MUCH more about us than most of us do about them. If a person from Amsterdam says, "hey, you should go out with me and my friends tonight," they mean it. They'll go out of their way to show you that wonderful city.

Too many people go to Amsterdam and never leave the red light area. IMO, that is the worst part of Amsterdam.

I found the best stuff in the Jordaan and the other residential neighborhoods just by walking around and bothering the friendly people.

Best Coffee Shop in A-dam, IMO: The Jolly Joker at the Nieumarkt. (Hope it's still there!)

There are no shortages of "coffeeshops". There is one on every corner. They all have an extensive selection of pot and hash. My favorite is Morrocan Blonde, too bad bad I can't take any home. 1/4 oz. is about f25,00 or about $10 (compare to $80 in the US). Ginen the 800% markup, there is no wonder there is drug related crime. There is none of that here.

BTW: Amsterdam downtown (where all the good stuff is) is about 1 sq. mile and easily walkable. The core is very dense and so most things are anywhere from 10 feet to 1/4 mile from your Hotel door. I should also say that there is no redlight district. The whole core is redlight. Unlike some places, the redlight district here is not filthy but rather quite upscale, festive really. Everything is out in the open, forget coming here and not being touched by sex and drugs is impossible, it's everywhere.

I was in Amsterdam a few years ago. Nice "coffee" shops there and they serve fries with everything. What's up with that??? Are french fries their national food or something???

By the way, did you order a Royale with Cheese???? (Anyone know where that's from).

The Royale w/ Cheese is a Quarter Pounder at McDonalds. Seen it in Pulp Fiction last night. Latez!

I used to frequently drive from London to Amsterdam and Hilversum (via hovercraft) on work assignments. All that Cthree says about Holland is true. Very friendly, nice buildings, good shopping, and lots to do. I always smiled seeing the sign "Warm Vlees" outside of the many sandwich shops in Amsterdam. I often wondered if there was a difference in taste between warm and cold flee sandwiches! BTW MARKS2K, I believe french fries may be the national dish of Belgium. There are stalls everywhere in Brussels selling pommes frits, and they really do taste better than anywhere else in the world.

Hey Y2KS2K,

I just thought it was unusual for them to serve french fries with almost every dish. Something else that was weird was the mayo with the fries!!!! Thought that was a little gross.

S2SaV, very good on the Pulp Fiction reference. It's one of my favorite movies.

cthree,

You should try and hook up with s200nl. I lived in the Netherlands for 4 years (Wassennar, Den Haag) and the dutch are some of the friendliest and nicest people you can find. I am sure that he can show you some great places for food, drink and entertainment that no one else will.

French fries are also very popular in Germany and of course, France. They are served with everything!
