Default Hard Top question....

I'm about to get a 2001 S2000, which I know it doesn't have a glass rear window as well as the defroser. But is the OEM hard top comes with defroser? And if so how can I make it work with the 01' S since it doesn't have the switch for the defroser? And also, does Honda sell the roof with glass rear window for older S2000? Hope someone can help me with this...

Oem top has defroster, I think you need to add an on/off switch for it on 00,01 modles.

The hardtop hardware kit comes with everything you need to install it into an older MY. Double check with Jeff (hardtopguy) just to make sure.

I made a webpage a few years ago which still seems to be online.
http://home.covad.net/~floydmah/
It has some details that might interest you concerning how to install the defroster, as well as creating a custom harness. Also, if you are interested in creating a clean look, you can actually install the '02 dash mounted switch. The factory console mounted defroster switch is really clumsy: gets activated inadvertently by your elbox and sometimes falls out of the holder. It would require a few construction skills of your own to put it together, but nothing big.
I was able to order the Honda parts from hardtopguy. You need to get the part numbers from somewhere (some of them in my old webpage). You would need the harness under the console, the '02 defroster switch, the defroster relay and radioshack connectors, wire, etc.

I made up the harness recently and it works well with my MY'01 and new hardtop (MY'06).

Good luck.

In addition to the info above, Honda discontinued the hardtop kit for the '01 models. You need to separately order the wiring that goes into the console, as well as the defroster relay, defroster switch, console parts which are replaced to install the defroster. The '06 hardtop kit contains the hardtop, new strikers, and two wiring harnesses, one of which you would use. I think that the newer cars had, depending on the year, two types of connectors, hence the two harnesses. It turns out that I was able to cannibalize one of the sockets to get a part to complete the wiring, so don't throw anything away.

The basic changes you need to make would be to install the defroster parts needed in the earlier pre-'02 cars to switch the defroster circuit on and off. If you don't have the glass window softtop, then you would install the hardtop circuitry without modifying that harness. My webpage describes how I installed the dash switch instead of the console switch. If you plan on getting the softtop replaced with one with the glass window/defroster, I also describe how to modify the harness to replicate the functionality of the post '01 cars (just a few more parts and some soldering). This could be done at a later date, regardless of where you put the defroster switch.
