price and mileage are about the same

So basically we've had the following discussions/arguments in the past:

AP1 vs AP2
AP1V1(before 2002) vs AP1V2
AP2V1 vs AP2V2
AP1 vs AP2 vs CR

Basically I tell ya what opinions you will likely be getting here.

VSA will help you at critical times and can be turned off with one push button if you don't want it. Among people who've driven both, some felt DBW is as responsive, and some did not like. I've never seen people commenting difference in terms of suspension, brakes, and stability. Some people will say try to get the newest model possible within your budget.

So I'll say, if the price of those two vehicles are close, then why not get the 06. It's newer and you prefer the V2 rims. If price difference is big, then get 05 since you like the color and most people agree V1 rims look the best among stock wheels.

Either way, you're getting an awesome car. Good luck with the purchase.

I have never owned either AP2 cars but let me see if I can help you. I have driven both so I'm not doing this blindly. The two big difference is probably the cable or DBW and VSA(traction control). As far as the cable or DBW goes, it is just a matter of preference. I have driven both and there was really no noticeable differences with the suspension, brakes, stability or acceleration. One very big difference that I believe is the traction control. I would recommend this very much as it can do wonders when you happen to have that one mistake. It can save your life to put it bluntly if you're a pretty aggressive driver that takes it to its limits. If you dont think you need it, then stick to the V1 for your color preference. That's all I can think of as far as the main differences between the two.

If I can recommend, get the 06+ models due to the traction control. That is a big plus in my book if you are an aggressive driver. I know it wasn't too detailed, but hope this help some.

I finally drove a dbw AP2, and I couldn't tell the difference in accel. It will come down to whether you want vsa or not.

debating between an ap1 and an ap2 is an entire argument on its own. but when deciding between ap2 v1 and ap2 v2, go with the newest you can afford. the biggest differences are dbw and vsa. most will suggest dbw goes unnoticeable and that vsa can be very important to have especially if you plan to dd the car in bad weather. other things like suspension, wheels, etc. can always be replaced.

if you drive it in the winter (snow and/or ice), VSA is a dealbreaker and you'd be better to get the 06 because of that as a safety feature. otherwise, either one is great.

I had an AP1 and then decided to get an 06 AP2.

I preferred the AP2 V2 for a number of reasons.

Laguna Blue - Was the main one.....

VSA- It helps you when you need it, you can turn it off whenever you want, the added safety is always a plus, and its a nice selling point if you are ever going to sell it down the road.

Seats - I prefer the seats on the 06 with the closed design vs the open hole design of all previous models.

Rims - I love the V2 design, as I even had V2's on my AP1.

DBW - played no part in my decision. It's just as responsive. At least to me.

The only thing I found annoying was the clutch delay valve on the 06. But this can easily be removed(with the right tools and a little bit of patience).

Either way, whatever route you go, you'll love the car.

the rear headrest speakers you get standard on the 06 are also a nice bonus compared to the v1. I test drove a leftover 05 that was considerably cheaper, but spent the extra money on the 06, and no regrets. Mostly it was done because I don't like buying a car that's been sitting on the lot for a year, and it had test drive miles on it, so cost wasn't my concern. The VSA, rear speakers, rims, and the seats were also more to my liking, so it made the decision easy for me.

I'd definitely base this on the VSA, and the price. If the price difference isn't drastic, and/or you want VSA, get the 06. Either way, you can't go wrong, because it's an S2000, but yeah, I agree, the newest S2000 is always the best one. Loved my 01, but no doubt in my mind I upgraded nicely.
