I heard the tranny was strong... hmm

I have to say though out of that era with the turbo triplets brought to North America, The 1999 VR-4 with its open headlights was a real looker!
you heard correct.

We put 1000awhp through them no problem. The gears and internals hold up just fine, we end up having to reinforce the casing a little though in the really high HP cars though.

my tranny blew up at 90k miles. the shifter started moving back and forth under accel/decel, and got as bad as to where the shifter would pop itself out of 5th gear on the highway if i lifted off the accelerator hard enough. about 3 weeks after that started the whole tranny exploded and left me with only 3rd gear

Seems like 99.9% of you say that there nothing but problems. I would say ir you have deep pockets get one it seems that they are money pits. But why not just get a wrx or evo?? Just my thoughts

I owned a '96 and the tranny was weak by 70k. Get an Evo, I've had an VIII and X and both were a better ownership experience (save the ricer blow-bys I always received in my VIII).

You should go to a Mitsubishi meet. you'll find about 20 daily drivers there and 3 running Mitsubishis, and all the owners talking about what to fix next.

The VR4 weighs about 1,000 pounds MORE than an S2000. It will be like going from a speed boat to a yacht.

Having worked on several I can tell you the cars are trash. They leak every fluid they contain and are poorly engineered compared to a Honda. Don't make the mistake of buying one of these money pits.
