Default Headlights slow to turn on?

Hope this hasn't been asked a dozen times, I couldn't find what I was looking for with the search function.

Last night I ran into the store, left the car running w/ just the parking lights on (my wife was in the car with our 4 legged son) when I came back out and turned the headlights on they took a few seconds to come up to full brightness. I've never had a car with HIDs, is this normal? Am I not supposed to leave just the parking lights on?

Probably just being paranoid but curious enough to ask.

That's just one of the many things that are cool about HID's.

Try it again, but in a quiet garage. The sound of them ramping up is really cool too.

is it bad to turn on hid's and leave them on (for photo-taking purposes) while the car is off?

Nah. I don't think they'd kill your battery that quickly

It is however, bad to turn them on and off constantly.
