Help with an engine noise...not the TCT...
All-
I apologize for posting in multiple forums, but I'm looking to cast a wide net here since I'm going to have to make a decision tomorrow on what to do with my car. So, I've also made a similar post in UTH. Anyway:
I had originally been thinking that I had a timing chain tensioner noise, and have posted several times in the following thread:
https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.ph...&#entry9715231
However, my Honda dealer has changed the TCT under my direction, and determined that that is not the cause of my noise. So, I though I'd open this up in its own thread, to see if anyone has experienced this noise before, and how it was resolved.
The car is a 2001 with 54,000 miles that I have owned since 2004 (when it had 28,000) miles. I have changed the oil at least every 4,000 miles with synthetic. About a year ago, I changed out the oil jet bolts.
Recently, with the colder weather, I've been driving with the top up. With this quieter drive, I became aware of a noise that would occur as I would rev up the engine (beyone 3000 RPM). I can best describe it as the sound of a rock tumbler (if you've ever heard rocks being polished). It just sounds like rocks rubbing together at kind of a slow frequency. And the frequency of the noise doesn't really seem to change with the engine RPM, but rather the intensity of the noise grows with engine RPM.
I've taken the car to the Honda dealer, since it is still under warranty. They have changed out the TCT and not fixed the problem. They want to tear down to the timing chain, but have no confidence that this will fix the problem.
They are suspicious of the oil jet bolts, and having noticed that I have a Comptech bar on the car, have called in HondaCare to check out the car to decide whether this work will be covered under warranty.
So, I've been reading about various noises that people have had, and am trying to discern whether I could have "cylinder scoring". The sound is subtle enough that I hadn't heard it when driving with the top down due to wind noise. Now, during the winter, I have just started hearing it. Does this sound at all consistent with 'slightly' scored cylinders?
Any other ideas?
Many thanks for any answers you might have.
