I wouldn't mind the 00-01 models if they were low mileage. Don't drop $20k on a car with 80-100k miles.

Glass back window is SO nice. Unless you've had a plastic window (I have), you don't know what you are in for. Of course, you can upgrade this later.

Yes, the car has become "softer" since 00. However, it's still one of the stiffest rides you're going to find. It's worth mentioning that the 04+ models are considered more "stable". If you aren't a top-notch driver, I'd be less worried in the AP2.

In the end, buy the lowest mileage car you can find in good shape. There isn't a big enough difference to justify doing otherwise.

Buy the original, you know it makes sense.

Fit some bigger wheels, lower the ride, fit an after market exhaust and use some BMW plastic window cleaner on the rear screen.

As the years went by The S got fatter, more cluttered and softer.

I'd personally go with an 03. All the bugs fix and the last of the 9K revs for the US.

I think it is more important finding a low mileage S2000 in great shape is probably more important than anything else. Keep your eyes open and try to get a good deal. I would probably prefer and '03, but i think the prices are a little bit too hyped up usually to justify one. Knowing that, maybe try getting a late 2002?

Is this going to be a daily driver? If yes get the lowest milage available. If you can swing it get the 04 or possible an end of year 05. Even at 8k this is the most fun you will ever have for the $.

How tall you are you? If you are close to 6' or above, the '04/05/06 has marginally more room from the driver's seat and the stock wheels look awesome!

I'll be in the same delema when I start looking for my s2k (year vs. price). Unfortunately that won't be for another year and a half
Never hurts to get an early start on learining about them though

One question I have is the duraability of the engines. Every s2000 I've ever seen for sale has 100k or less kms on them...I know most people don't use these as their daily drivers, but I hope it's safe to assume they're every bit as reliable as any other Honda as long as it's well maintained.

I've owned my S for a year and drive the shit out of it. It's a 2001, and I havent experienced a single problem, even with my extent of mods.
I know in 02 they added speakers, a glass window, chrome rings on the lights, and a leather console. I don't know what bugs existed or how they were fixed. For the $5k you are facing, get a hardtop, upgrade the sound system, and buy a leather console from Rick's. That's what I did.
I like the 02-03 a lot, but I couldn't be happier with my 01. The softop sucks, yeah, but get a hardtop for the winter and keep the top down in the summer. Im pretty sure my system is a helluva lot nicer than 02-06. And the leather consoles can be had for about $80 IIRC.
00-01 seems like a smarter investment. 02-03 if you want it a little cleaner and more luxurious and too lazy to fix it up with your own flavor. 04+ is totally different.

you mean a VINYL console. It sure as hell ain't leather.

the "bugs" from the older models are, most notably, the "clutch buzz" and the driver side window regulator. These are fixed for the most part in later 2002 and 2003s.
