NJ has a $5 billion deficit currently. They tried to privatize its inspection stations around 1998 (could be wrong about the date). It was a dismal attempt at trying to lower costs and finally meet the goverments requirements on greenhouse gasses. Pretty sure they gave up on that already. Currently we get denied a lot of goverment aid because we haven't managed to clean up our act enough.

Putting the cars on rollers before doing the emissions test was actually fairly bright. As I understand it a lot less people fail the test now. It went from like 20% to 2%. The way it was explained to me is that a car at idle while producing less emissions, produces more CONCENTRATED emissions that was making people fail. When the car is rev'ing higher you get a more true result, because the gasses are being forced out vs being allowed to build up. I guess an example would be filling a room with smoke while the door is open. The room will fill with a dense smoke that will eventually make it out the door in a concentrated form, therefore showing up as more toxic. Now if you put a fan in the door your still producing the same levels of smoke but the room will be clearer and the gasses will be more diffused and less toxic.

Does that make any sense?

I mean they REALLY slam the crap out of your front suspension for about 20 seconds. Imagine running over 3 inch high strips of concrete at about 60 mph for a quarter mile and you get the idea. I could hear it slamming into the bump stops.

- Then they do that test I mentioned above to check your front alignment and suspension.
It sounds like they test it to make sure you need an alignment.

Then again, it is probably the same as your typical road in Michigan.

Move to Qld, Australia and you'll never ever have to get anything on your car inspected again (unless you let it's registration lapse). You can drive anything on wheels here...... which is a bit of a worry

Dude, if I ever got a job offer in Australia I'd probably take it in a heartbeat. I'd sell my condo and be halfway there before the day was out . I've always thought living in Australia would be pretty damn cool. (Says the guy who is currently watching Steve Irwin on Croc Hunter).
