Default Help with purchasing my first S2K

Hi All,

I'm new to this forum. I joined this forum to gain information regarding the s2k. I have been searching for awhile to upgrade from my 2002 RSX Type S. I drove my friends 2002 S2k, and wow I want one now. I prefer the AP1 over the AP2, due to the smaller displacement motor and higher rev capabilities. But I believe I found an AP2 priced well below market value, which I cannot pass up. I wanted your opinions in determining if the car is worth getting.

Thats the picture of the car. Here are the details.
Please note that I am providing the details which the seller has provided me. I would like your inputs in valuing this car.

Quoted from seller--
"it has a chip small on the driver window along the top, its not on the surface... I'm not sure how to explain it but its like someone hit into it while it was half down and caught part of it causing it to chip. its not very large and doesn't affect the seal when the window is closed. it has an undiagnosed cold start misfire. it as small rock chips on the hood from highway driving. otherwise there's no major wear and tear that any normal used car would have. it does have a clean title."

Besides the minor wear and tear, my most major concern is the undiagnosed cold start misfire.

I've researched this on the forums and found that it could be several things which cause this. Ignition coils, bad gas, dirty fuel inj, and bent valves or damaged head.

The worst damage that it could be would be bent valves or damaged head.

How do you guys think I should go about in determining if I should purchase the car or not. I'm taking a look at it on Saturday. I don't want to state the price, but its way below kbb and nada values. But how much lower must it be in order to consider purchasing it?

Thanks for the input, hopefully it all goes well and i'll be as happy as you guys owning a s2k.

First, you need to know what that undiagnosed problem is. If it is bent valves or damaged head, you might not want it anymore. Go get a compression or leakdown test to find out. Hell, go bring it in to a shop to get everything check. This is what I would look into first.

Anyways, how much is he asking for it? Alot of miles IMO, almost making it seem like it was beat on since day 1.

If it were me, it would have to be priced stupidly low for me to consider buying it with an "undiagnosed misfire".

High miles for an 04+ (average is supposed to be 12-15k/year) so it's about 30k higher than "normal" IF it's an 04. Even worse if it's newer than that.

I'd bide my time and find a different one, personally.

My recommendation is to move on and find a better used AP2. The used market is flooded with S2000; there are plenty of fish in the sea.

Up to you. Some people don't have the patience or the knowledge to fix engine issues. Here's a reference point: Good condition low mileage used 04 can be had for 19.5k; that's just 6k more than that car you are looking at. If you can fix the engine problems for less than 6k, then you still have other issues in the future because of the fact that it is high mileage.

Me? I rather spend the extra money and buy a new 07 for 26.5k

Yeah that is way high I think for a 2004 MY. You would have to buy it thinking at the least you would have to replace the cylinder head. If you want to spend around 13.5k or so go for an AP1. I got mine with about 66k on it 1 owner clean and clear title in very nice condition for $13.5k in October. That is a ton of miles for an '04 and probably been beaten to death.
I would stay far far away from it.

Well, honestly I have a lot of faith in Hondas. I do not believe the mileage should be an issue. I do understand that suspension parts do wear out or what not. But wouldn't it be easy to say that most mileage would possible be due to highway commuting? I will be taking a look at the car this Sat, hopefully will be able to go for a test drive and see how stiff the chassis still feels.
